WHAT IS PRACTICES & PROMPTS?

We gather as a community to companion one another in the cultivation of our creative and spiritual lives/selves. We do this through creative prompts & contemplative practices with space for deep listening and sharing of our own experiences, creative work, and responses.

A wider kind of
spiritual community

We are after a wider spirituality in two ways

First, there is a wideness of spirituality that invites us to explore and receive from many religious traditions and spiritual streams outside our own. Belonging is not based on what we believe or don’t believe. It is an intentional space to reimagine a way of being spiritual in the world that feels authentic, and to do so with others.

Second, there is a wideness of spirituality that integrates creativity as a part of our spiritual lives and practice. The creative process invites us to listen to our intuitive depths, mindfully notice our surroundings, empathize with others, and to experience inspiration in compassionate connection with the Divine / Reality / Source.

A deeper kind of creative community

We are after creative depth in two ways

First, there is the depth of interactions that we have in community. We want to make space to share our work and companion one another, reflecting on the inner movements of our hearts as they connect with the subject matter, life situations, and inspiration for our creative work.

Second, there is the depth of our creative work that comes from integrating spiritual practices with creative prompts. These enable us to grow in greater mindfulness, compassion, self-awareness, and wisdom, which are then communicated in our creative work with layers of meaning and insight.

"After participating in Practices & Prompts, I discovered a new confidence in remaining open within stillness, and in allowing the creative flow to unfold on its own, if and when it is willing to."

WHAT DO WE DO TOGETHER?

Our weekly rhythms include a mixture of spiritual practices and creative prompts.

Here are a few examples of how we do this:

  • Reflection on thematic pairings of visual art pieces, songs or poems, and sacred texts.
  • Introduction of a new spiritual practice, like a type of meditation, or a journaling prompt.
  • On the first Sundays of the month we share an art prompt connected to the next month’s Mindful Art Share theme

We have space for reflection and creative response

Here are some ways we create space to process and respond:

  • Begin a creative piece, sketching in response, or beginning to write a song or poem.
  • Journaling exercises are used to process and reflect as individuals
  • Times of silence to notice our own internal responses and emotional processing
  • Space for questions to further clarify a new practice, teaching, or prompt

We share with one another
  • We do this primarily through intentional small group conversation, where those who wish may share about their experiences and reflections. It is a space to companion one another, listening deeply and helping surface new insights.
  • We cultivate a posture of curiosity and mutual appreciation as we share from our spiritual heritages and receive from others, even when we see things differently.
  • On third Sundays we share our creative work with each other in a mindful, multi-genre art share / open mic

WHAT DO
WE DO TOGETHER?

First, we begin with a creative prompt or spiritual practice.

Here are a few examples of how we do this:

  • Reflection on a visual art piece paired with a song or poem and a thematically related religious text.
  • Introduction of a new spiritual practice, like a type of meditation, or a journaling prompt.
  • Sharing an art prompt connected to an upcoming Mindful Art Share theme

Then we have space for reflection and creative response.

Here are some ways we create space to process and respond:

  • Begin a creative piece, sketching in response, or beginning to write a song or poem.
  • Journaling exercises are used to process and reflect as individuals
  • Space for questions and large group discussion to further clarify a new practice

Finally, we share with each other.
  • We do this primarily through intentional small group conversation, where those who wish may share about their experiences and reflections. It is a space to companion one another, listening deeply and helping surface new insights.

TESTIMONIAL:  ZAHRA - SOUTH KOREA

"I have never been part of any other online spiritual groups before. I found Practices & Prompts to be very welcoming, both in allowing me to freely share my thoughts and opinions about the topics discussed, and in engaging in open conversation with all other participants in the group. I found this absolutely beautiful, as it made me realize how much we need spaces in real life where communication can happen with ease and where mutual respect is genuinely appreciated, and that Practices & Prompts, though virtual, offers a living example of how such spaces can be cultivated and carried into everyday life.

"I found this absolutely beautiful, as it made me realize how much we need spaces in real life where communication can happen with ease and where mutual respect is genuinely appreciated"

The core of the practices is founded on spirituality, which is a shared ground that allows all participants to feel connected to one another despite their differences. Through each practice and prompt, I found myself able to return to that shared space of connection.

Before becoming part of this community and these sessions, I often felt that in order to be creative, I needed to produce something great or achieve a distinct and impressive outcome in my work. After participating in Practices & Prompts, I discovered a new confidence in remaining open within stillness, and in allowing the creative flow to unfold on its own, if and when it is willing to.

I also deeply appreciate the moments in which I found myself engaging in deep listening and connecting with others from that space."

"It is good to experience that we are not alone in our usual creative struggles and occasional successes"

“Just gathering in community is so helpful and meeting people. It is good to experience that we are not alone in our usual creative struggles and occasional successes... It was also helpful to think about the monthly creative Art Prompt (”Soap”) as well as the GPS spiritual practice. And talking though what’s in our heads helps discover what we’re thinking and to bring direction and focus. I hope to attend as many as are possible.

Mindful Art Share

On the third Sunday of every month, as part of our rhythm of Practices & Prompts, we share our creative work inspired by the monthly art prompt theme. Those prompts are introduced during the first Sunday of the prior month, giving six weeks to work on a creative piece to share.

We also host an Asia Art
Share that meets on the Friday before the third Sunday to accomodate different time zones.
